Dick and Diane Thompson want others in Central New York to know that solar does work here! They are very happy with the photovoltaic (PV) panels they have installed and solar hot water unit and would encourage others in the area to move towards solar energy and hot water. They chose solar after considering small wind and solar because it was clean, there is no maintenance and is affordable after the rebates.
Address: 2824 Slate Hill Road, Marietta
House Area: 1200 square feet
Property Area: 11.4 acres
House Built: 1978
Alternative Energy: Solar PV panels (4KW, 18 USA made panels with Enphase micro inverters) and solar water (Sunward 2 flat panel, 80 gallon storage tank and solar powered pump)
Date: Installed PV panels in October 2011 and Hot water in August 2012.
Installer: Justin Williams, CNY Solar
Financial Terms: The Thompsons purchased their units. Before rebates and tax credits, the cost of PV was $25,000 (now would be less, about $16,000) and for the solar water was $8,000. After rebates and credits the cost of the solar PV panels was approximately $8,000 and the solar water was $2,000.
Energy Bills: The Thompson’s electricity bill went from $1500/ year to $500/year, an approximate savings of $1000/year. Their heating bill (heating source is oil) has also been reduced as now they use more electric for heating the house and less oil.
Advantages of their system: Clean energy, money savings and very low maintenance!
The Thompsons are considering adding more PV panels someday!
